Some facts about Oahu (Hawaii) Shark Attacks:
As you can find out from many sources, shark attacks in Hawaii are actually not very common. Despite over 7.3 million tourists coming to Hawaii (Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and the Big Island) there are only about 5 attacks a year, mostly on surfers who are mistaken for sea turtles. The premise of our film is that man's tinkering with nature and chemicals has created a "steriod rage" type of effect on sharks and other sea creatures, which are normally more concentrated on eating fish.
The average tourist should have no fear of getting attacked by a shark in Hawaii any more than he/she would expect it to happen in Florida, Australia, or any other vacation destination where ocean life is present. The last thing we would want to do is discourage the average vacationer from taking a cruise, adventure vacation, beach tour, or trip to Hawaii, which boasts volcanoes, a rain forest, and some of the friendliest people on the planet.
Types of Sharks in Hawaii Include:
Tiger, Hammerhead, Reef Whitetip, and Sandbar.
We all know the story of Bethany Hamilton, the girl who lost her arm to a shark attack in Hawaii. Many people do not know that she still goes out and surfs today, and has even achieved championship status in surfing. She even went on to write the book Soul Surfer, a testimonial of her recovery. If anyone had the right to avoid beaches, swimming, and surfing, it would surely be her, but she has gone out again because she understands the low likelihood of shark attacks on humans.
